December Fishing Report: Winter Wonderland in Puerto Vallarta
Well, fishermen, The November fishing was a hot one, but December fishing is rolling in with a slight temperature drop. Don’t worry though, it’s still plenty of warm water for some fantastic fishing! This month has changed with water conditions and several species of fish visiting our shores here offshore and inshore. Let’s take a look at some inshore action.
Inshore Action
The inshore waters are still firing on all cylinders. We’re finding Mahi-Mahi, Yellowtail, Roosterfish, Spanish Mackerel, and Snapper. Trolling is a reliable method, especially with those classic lures that have been produced for years like Black Blart. However, when we locate schools of fish, pitching baits and jigs becomes the game-changer. Those big schools of Yellowtail are always a blast to target with live bait. With plenty of action all these four to six-hour trips will be a blast this December. The inshore action with all the humpback whales playing alongside the boats will be a day to remember.
Offshore Adventures
Offshore, the water’s still warm enough for some serious fishing. While the big Marlin and Tuna have migrated further out, Striped Marlin are making their presence known. We’re also finding schools of Tuna roaming around the temperature breaks. This winter there will be marlin action all of the winter months. When the temperatures change along the shore, there will be tuna and marlin in these areas. The Dorados will be around and should be hitting lures, mullet rigs, and live bait.
Our 8-hour trips are perfect for targeting these big game fish. We’ll be trolling with a variety of lures, from high-speed lures to slow-trolled baits. If the offshore bite slows down, we can always head inshore and find some fun action action.
Winter Whale Watching
One of the highlights of winter in Puerto Vallarta is the arrival of Humpback Whales. It’s an incredible experience to see these majestic creatures up close. We often encounter mothers and their calves playing in the bay, making for unforgettable memories. Every winter we have the pleasure to be fishing inshore and offshore while watching these huge manuals play right beside our boats.

Fishing Conditions
The water clarity is exceptional, and the seas are typically calm, creating ideal fishing conditions. However, as we progress through the month, we might experience some windier days. Nine out of ten days the seas will be flat and have incredible fishing conditions. The winter water temperatures will hover around 75 degrees to 80 degrees.
A Few Tips for Anglers
Stay Hydrated: Even though it’s not scorching hot, it’s important to stay hydrated, especially when spending long hours on the water.
Sun Protection: Don’t forget to protect your skin from the sun. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
Layer Up: While the days are warm, the mornings and evenings can get chilly. It’s a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater. The winter temperatures will range from 65 to about 75 degrees mid-day.
Respect the Marine Environment: Practice catch-and-release, and dispose of fishing line responsibly.
